Marine controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) sounding has the ability to map the subsurface resistivity from the seafloor.

Hydrocarbon filled reservoirs will typically have high resistivity compared to shale or water filled reservoirs. CSEM therefore has the unique potential of distinguishing between hydrocarbon and water filled reservoirs.

CSEM surveys can be used in early stages of prospect evaluation in order to identify hydrocarbon resources. CSEM data will complement seismic data and can potentially reduce the number of exploration wells needed to identify hydrocarbon resources and define reservoir boundaries.
